Sprocket is a form of a gear or a wheel that is designed to interlock with the chains or tracks. It has metal teeth that meshes with the chains and helps in the motion of the equipment. These can be used in bicycles, motorcycles, cars, tanks and machinery parts etc. In tanks the toothed wheel that transmits motion to the tracks is known as drive sprocket. This sprocket can be positioned at both front and rear of the vehicle. The sprockets used in motorcycles are also known as motorcycle sprockets. In bicycles the variation in the size of the chain and in turn variation in the tooth count of the sprocket the over all gear ratio can be modified. Such gears are called Derailleur gears.

There are different types of sprockets; these mainly include Chain Sprockets and Motorcycle Sprockets. In case of a 10 – speed bicycle, the use of two driving sprockets and five driven sprockets allows the bicycle to have ten varied forms of gear ratios. The lower gear ratios make the pedaling easier even up the hills whereas the higher gear ratios make pedaling easier on flat roads. These sprockets also find use in movie projectors, cameras etc.
